Should every amalgam filling be removed?
No. Routine removal of an intact amalgam filling with no underlying decay is not recommended solely because it contains mercury. Removal may result in the loss of healthy tooth structure and a temporary increase in mercury vapour exposure during the procedure.
How is the decision made?
We assess the condition of the filling and tooth, clinical needs and documented material sensitivities. Potential benefits and risks are discussed with the patient.
The SMART approach
When amalgam removal is necessary, the procedure is planned with protection of the patient and clinical team in mind. The approach and steps followed within the SMART protocol at our clinic are explained during your examination.
After removal
The new restoration is selected according to the remaining tooth structure and functional needs. We do not promise that removal will treat general illnesses or provide a “detox”.
