The implant and the restoration attached to it are different structures. The implant sits within the bone, while the restoration is the visible part that provides chewing function. Their maintenance and replacement needs are therefore assessed separately.
What affects longevity?
The position and number of implants, prosthesis design, passive fit, bite forces, material, oral hygiene and regular reviews can all affect the long-term result.
Why does the restoration need maintenance?
Plaque can accumulate around implants, just as it does around natural teeth. Screw connections, restoration surfaces and areas that need cleaning should be checked regularly. Some components may require maintenance or replacement over time.
Ongoing care
A healthy implant does not mean the restoration attached to it will remain maintenance-free for life.
Why are regular reviews important?
Reviews assess the tissues around the implants, the fit of the restoration, screws and the bite. Follow-up intervals are tailored to individual risk.
